An elastic collision is that in which the momentum of the system as well as kinetic energy of the system before and after collision is conserved. An inelastic collision is that in which the momentum of the system before and after collision is conserved but the kinetic energy before and after collision is not conserved.

Collision in which momentum and energy of system are conserved

Explanation:

  1. In Elastic collision there is no loss of energy of body (kinetic energy)  that is kinetic energy of bodies remain conserved
  2. Momentum of the bodies remain conserved
  3. There is no conversion of kinetic energy into any other form like noise, heat energy etc hence no loss in energy occurs
  4. Coefficient of restitution for perfectly elastic collision is 1. It is defined as the factor which gives the measure of bouncing of bodies after collision  and is given as ratio of relative velocity after collision to the relative velocity before collision
