The phenomenon of the production of electricity from a magnetic field is known as electromagnetic induction (EMI).

The device that works on this principle is a generator.

The frequency of the electric current produced in India is 50 Hz.

Explanation:

Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) :

Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) is used to produce large electric power at huge power stations.

Generators are of two types:

AC generator and DC generator.

  • The current which changes its direction continuously is known as alternating current  AC. AC changes its direction after every 1/100 second.
  • The current which does not change its direction and flows in the same direction is called a direct current (DC).
  • A generator is used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
  • AC generators produce alternating currents. In addition, there are hydro-generator and thermal generators.
  • Hydro-genators convert the potential energy of water to electricity, whereas thermal generators convert the heat energy of the steam to electric energy.

The phenomenon in which voltage is induced in a closed circuit when a conductor is rotated freely inside the magnetic field of a magnet is called electromagnetic induction.

Generator and dynamo are the devices that works on this principle.

The frequency of the electric current produced in India is 50 Hz,

Electomagnetic induction was first explained by Michael Faraday during 1830's. Faraday observed the reverse effect of producing electricity by using a magnet and thus called electromagnetic induction.

Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction:

During his experiment, important laws were obtained called Faraday's laws of electromagnetic induction. Following points were concluded in his experiment:

  • Whenever the magnetic flux linked with the closed circuit changes, an emf is induced in the coil.
  • The magnitude of induced emf is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux in the circuit.
  • The induced emf lasts as long as the change in magnetic flux continues in the circuit.
