This is a typical circuit which is made up from a stator (Housing) and an isolated, rotating conductor.
The only physical connection is through the fixed carbon brushes, notice the 'Commutator' is split into two so as that when it rotates half way, it can keep the rotation constant and directional. As current passes through the conducting loop, an electromagnetic field is induced within the motor. The opposing Poles of the Loop (N) and the Large magnet housing (S) repel eachother, turning the whole conductor until the break is met in the commutator, which then changes/resets the polarity back to what it started as . This is a continuous operation
Diagram is pretty essential if you're relatively new to it all.
hope this helps
