The tendency of a Covalently bonded atom to attract shared electrons towards itself is called as Electronegativity.

Electronegativity and electron affinity both have tendency to attract electrons but , electron affinity is for isolated Atoms ,where as Electronegativity is for bonded atoms.

Electronegativity was explained by Pauling for first time.

Note :-

Small Atoms are normally having more Electronegativity than larger atoms.

Factors Affecting Electronegativity

1. Atomic Size :-

{\boxed{\sf Electronegativity\:\:\:\alpha\:\:\:\dfrac{1}{Atomic\:Size}}}

Example :- F > Cl > Br > I

2. Effective Nuclear Charge :-

{\boxed{\sf Electronegativity\:\:\alpha\:\:Z_{eff}\:\:\dfrac{+ve\:charge}{-ve\:Charge}}}

3. Hybridisation state of an atom or % s-character :

{\boxed{\sf Electronegativity\:\:\alpha\:\:\%\: s-character }}
