A measure of the tendency of a metal to lose electrons to a surrounding solution. It is the potential difference, at equilibrium, between the metal and a solution of its ions. It can’t be measured directly and is usually compared against that of a hydrogen electrode.

The electrode potential is define as the potential of a cell consisting of the electrode inacting as a cathode and the standard hydrogen electrode acting as an anode. Reduction always takes place at the cathode, and oxidation at the anode.
