What is electrolysis?

If in an electrolyte we pass electricity then there will be chemical decomposition that process of chemical decomposition is known as electrolysis.

Two important points about electrolysis are:-

• There will be reduction process on the cathode side as because there will decrease in oxidation number.

• But on the anode side there will be increase of oxidation number therefore there will be oxidation. It is so because there will loss of electrons.
