Normally, water does not conduct electricity. However, when certain substances are dissolved in water, an electric current will flow.

These substances are called electrolytes.

When an electrolyte is dissolved in water, it separates into exactly two ions: one positive and one negative.

We call this process electrolytic dissociation.
