Electrolytic refining is process of obtaining pure metal by the process of Electrolysis. The electrolyte has to be salt of the metal which  needs to be purified or refined.                      

Explanation:

We are trying to refine copper so the electrolyte taken is acidified copper sulphate. The anode taken as a thick rod made up of impure copper. The cathode is made up of pure copper and it is taken in the form of a thin rod then current passes copper sulphate.

In this method an electric current is passed through a solution called electrolyte that contains dissolved metals. This causes the dissolved metal to be deposit onto the negatively charged cathode.
