The strong magnetic field produced inside a solenoid an be used to magnetise a piece of magnetic material like soft iron when placed inside the coil. The magnet so formed is called electromagnet.

The magnetic effects remains only till the current is flowing through the solenoid.

principle of an electromagnet:

A magnet that consists of a piece of iron or steel surrounded by a coil is known as an electromagnet. When an electric current is passed through the coil, the metal becomes magnetic.

An electromagnet is used in electric bells, electric motors, telephone diaphragms, loudspeakers and for sorting scrap metal.
