The amount of energy released while converting a neutral gaseous isolated atom into a negatively charged gaseous ion( anion) by the addition of electron is called Electron Affinity (A.N). X(g) + e- gives X-(g) + E.A. where X is any element taken in its gaseous state. The E.A of oxygen is may be -140.9.

Hi Friend,
Here is your answer,
Electron affinity is a measure of the tendency of the atom to accept electrons. Therefore the atoms to accept electrons. Therefore the atoms with high values of electo - negavtivity and electron affinity forms anions readily and hence ionic compounds.
The group 6 elements oxygen and sulfur which both form -2 ions.
