Electron gain enthalpy of an element is the energy when a neutral outlying gaseous atom accepts an extra electron to form the gaseous anion.
It is denoted by ∆egH.
➡ The ∆egH1 for most of the elements is NEGATIVE while their ∆egH2 is always POSITIVE.
➡ The ∆egH1 becomes MORE NEGATIVE from LEFT to RIGHT in a PERIOD and LESS NEGATIVE from TOP to BOTTOM in a GROUP.
➡ The ∆egH of elements having exactly half - filled and completely filled orbitals is POSITIVE.
Like :- ∆egH of Be, Mg, Ca, N and inert gases is positive.
