What is electroplating? Write any three examples with reason?
Answers
Electroplating is the process of applying metal coating on metallic or non metallic surface through electro chemical process. It is passing the electric current into the metal through the aqueous solution of metal to be deposited. The metal acts as anode whereas the part that is to be plated acts as cathode.
For example, iron is electroplated with metals such as copper by carrying out electrolysis in copper sulphate solution.
Electrical conductivity: Electrical conductivity can be increased by applying thin layer of metals which has conducting properties. For example, copper plating is used in communicating equipment and circuits.
1. Decorative purposes: The electroplating improves the overall appearance of the metal. The common metals used are chromium, zinc, copper, nickel etc.
For example,
It is used in making inexpensive jewelry in which gold or silver plating is applied over inexpensive metal making it look more radiant and alluring.
Chromium plating is done on utensils and kitchen wares for shiny and pleasant appearance.
