An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. Most adverb clauses are elliptical clauses. Elliptical clauses in which words, such as the noun or the verb, are implied. When words in the middle of an elliptical clauses are omitted, a comma take their place.

EXAMPLE

Jessica had five dollars;Monica three. ( The verb had was dropped from the second clause, but the meaning is still clear.)
