The SI unit of EMF is volt (V).

  • EMF ( Electromotive Force) is not actually a force. It is the electric potential produced by an electrochemical cell or produced due to a changing magnetic field.
  • Numerically, EMF = V + Ir

Here, V = Voltage of the cell

I = Current across the circuit

r = Internal resistance of the cell

  • If a cell has zero internal resistance then E = V. Since the SI unit of the voltage of a cell is Volts,

⇒ SI unit of EMF is also Volts.

  • EMF dimension is given as ML^2T^-^3A^-^1
  • When 1 joule of work is done per unit coulomb charge, we say that 1 volt of electromotive force is used.
