network of membranous tubules within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell, continuous with the nuclear membrane. It usually has ribosomes attached and is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.

endoplasmic reticulum is a cellorganell
if ribosomes are attached to it then it is called rer(rough endoplasmic reticulum)
if ribosomes are not attached to it then it is called ser(smooth endoplasmic reticulum)
