Endoplasmic reticulum- Endoplasmic reticulum is a network of of complex tubular membranes exclusively present over the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell.

There are two types of Endoplasmic reticulum:-

  • smooth endoplasmic reticulum
  • rough endoplasmic reticulum

Functions of smooth endoplasmic reticulum -

  • It is a synthesis of lipids such as phospholipid.
  • It helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates.
  • It produces or secretes steroid hormones.

Functions of rough endoplasmic reticulum-

  • It is a synthesis of protein and cholesterol.
  • It also helps in the process of protein folding.
