Endoplasmic Reticulum : It is a membrane bound organelle. It is formed by large network of tubes and sheets.

Occurance in 3 forms :

  • Long tubules
  • Vesicles (Oblong bags)
  • Cisternae (Closed, fluid filled sacs)

Attachment :

  • One side with plasma membrane.
  • Other side with outer nuclear membrane.

Types Of Endoplasmic Reticulum :

★ Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) : Membranes of SER are smooth because ribosomes are not attached to them.

★ Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) : Ribosomes are attached to the outer surface of RER membranes. Hence, RER membranes have rough appearance.

Function Of Endoplasmic Reticulum :

★ Endoplasmic reticulum provides mechanical support to the cell.

★ RER synthesize proteins.

★ SER manufacture fat molecules or lipids.

★ Endoplasmic Reticulum also shows membrane biogenesis.

  • Some of the protein and lipids helps in building cell membrane. This process is known as membrane biogenesis.

★ SER of liver cells takes part in detoxification of many drugs and poisons.

★ Endoplasmic Reticulum serves channel for transport of material between cytoplasm and nucleus.
