Endoplasmic reticulum:- It is a membranous network, enclosing a fluid-filled lumen.

It's main functions:-

Synthesis of proteins (Rough ER).

Synthesis of lipids and other metabolic products and their secretion (SER).

Helps in the formation of cell plate and nuclear membrane during cell division.

ER also produces substance for new cellular parts (especially, cell membrane).

Some of the proteins and lipids produced by ER, helps in building the cell/plasma membrane and this very process is termed as membrane biogenesis.

Endoplasmic reticulum helps to serve as channels for the transport of various materials (especially, proteins) between different regions of the cytoplasm or between the cytoplasm and the nucleus.

ER also provides internal support (mechanical support) to the colloidal cytoplasmic matrix of the cell.

Hope it helps..:-)

Answer:

Explanation:

The endoplasmic reticulum serves many general functions, including the folding of protein molecules in sacs called cisternae and the transport of synthesized proteins in vesicles to the Golgi apparatus.
