The endodermis is a specialized layer of cells marking the inner limit of the cortex. A typical endodermis is usually present in roots, in aquatic and subterranean stems and in the aerial stems of certain families . Leaves and aerial stems often show a starch sheath, probably representing a modified endodermis.
