English Literature

Until the early 19th century, it only deals with the literature of the United Kingdom, the Crown dependencies and Ireland.

It does not include literature written in the other languages of Britain.

The English language has developed over the course of more than 1,400 years.

Answer:

English literature means different things in different contexts. Literature comes from the Latin word "litera" which means "acquainted with letters." All definitions of literature agree that English literature includes literary works like novels, stories, poems, nonfiction and plays composed in English.
