Unexpected and sudden increase in the number of people affected by a particular disease within a geographical region.

A famine is a widespread scarcity of food, caused by several factors including war, inflation, crop failure, population imbalance, or government policies. This phenomenon is usually accompanied or followed by regional malnutrition, starvation, epidemic, and increased mortality.

Epidemic and Famines -- during 1918 to 19 and 1920 to 21 crops failed in many parts of India, resulting acute shortages of food. This was accompanied by an influenza epidemic. According to the census of 1921, 12 - 13 million people perished as a result of famines and the epidemic.
