What is epididemis in male and female

The epididymis is a long, coiled tube that rests on the backside of each testicle. It carries and stores sperm cells that are created in the testes. It’s also the job of the epididymis to bring the sperm to maturity — the sperm that emerge from the testes are immature and incapable of fertilization. During sexual arousal, contractions force the sperm into the vas deferens.

Epididymis is a part of the male reproductive system. It stores and transports sperm from the testis.

Explanation:

The male reproductive system consists of external penis and scrotum, internally a pair of testis enclosed in a sac like structure called the scrotum, epididymis, vas deferens, accessory glands, such as seminal vesicles, prostrate gland and the bulbourethral glands.

The scrotum is located outside the body to help regulate the temperature of testis. The temperature of testis should always be  3- 4 degrees lower than the body temperature to be able to produce viable sperm. The hormones Testosterone and Androgen are produced in the testis and have a major role in development of secondary sexual characters and reproductive functions. Sperm is produced  by meiotic division of germ cells in the seminiferous tubule.

The Epididymis is the long, white, super-coiled tubes present on the backside of each testis. The sperm produced in the seminiferous tubules enters the epididymis and is stored there until it undergoes maturation, it takes nearly a week to mature. The mature sperm is now called spermatozoa. It passes through the vas deference to finally reach the ejaculatory duct. The spermatozoa are then nourished and lubricated by the fluids produced by the accessory glands on their way, this fluid with spermatozoa is called semen. Semen is then ejaculated through the urethra.
