An earthquake is the perceptible shaking of the ration earth, resulting in sudden release of energy in the earth's crust that creates seismic waves. It is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. The tectonic plates are always moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress on the edges overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake.
