In this case the "altitude" is electric potential or voltage. 

Equipotential lines are always perpendicular to the electric field.

In three dimensions, the lines form equipotential surfaces.

Equpotential line ---- Equipotential line is a imaginary line in a field of flow such that the total head is the same for all points on the line , and therefore the direction of flow is directly perpendicular to the line at all points...
