In a given combination of resistors (series, parallel, or combination of series/ parallel), the equivalent resistance is that value of resistance, which when replaced in place of the combination, will continue to give the same performance for the part of circuit outside this combination.

Hope it helps...

In many electrical circuits the combination of resistances is used. The use of components can increase the size of an electric circuit. It is important to use lesser number of components to keep electrical circuits small and less crowded.

A mixture of several resistances can be replaced by a single resistor of suitable value for example.

A single resistance that can substitute any combination of resistances, such that the current stays the same through the circuit, is called equivalent resistance.
