➢ Endoplasmic Reticulum ( ER )

The endoplasmic reticulum is a base of a series of important biological macromolecules other than nucleic acids, such as proteins, lipids (such as triglycerides), and sugars. The slippery endoplasmic reticulum also has detoxification functions. For example, the slippery endoplasmic reticulum in liver cells contains some enzymes to remove fat-soluble waste and metabolic harmful substances.

➢ Overview

The endoplasmic reticulum is a cystic, vesicular and tubular structure formed by a layer of unit membrane, and forms a continuous retinal membrane system. Because it is close to the inside of the cytoplasm, it is called the endoplasmic reticulum.

➢ Classification

According to whether there are ribosomes attached to the outer surface of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, the endoplasmic reticulum is generally divided into two basic types:

  • Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and
  • Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER).
