the minimum velocity needed by an object to escape from the gravitational force of the earth is known as the escape velocity and moon also have gravity and atmosphere.

Escape velocity:
The maximum velocity which a body must be projecting from the surface of planet so that its way overcomes gravitational influence and travel to infinite.
Derivation of expression:
Kinetic energy = potential energy
1/2(mv²) = GMm/R
v² = 2GM/R
v = √2GM/R --------- (i)
but g=GM/R²
gR=GM/R --------- (ii)
Substitute (ii) in (i)
v=√2gR
Reason for no atmosphere on moon:
The mass of the moon is so small that the gravitation is so small. Therefore, the escape velocity of moon is very less than the Earth. So that, it cannot hold the atmosphere
