Estates-General, also called StatesGeneral, French États-Généraux, in France of the pre-Revolutionary monarchy, the representativeassembly of the three “estates,” or orders of the realm: the clergy and nobility—which were privileged minorities—and a Third Estate, which represented the majority of the people.

The Estates general (États généraux) was an assembly of the aristocracy, the clergy, and the bourgeoisie (wealthy people representing larger cities). It was first called by Philippe le Bel in 1302 to back his conflict with the pope, who was a trying to assert his authority over the French church and king. The last États généraux met in 1789, and transformed into a single Assemblée générale, which called for a constitutional government. This marked the beginning of the French Revolution. In a way, the États généraux were the ancestor of today’s Assemblée nationale.
