Esters are formed by the reaction of ethanol or an alcohol and an acid. Ethanoic reacts with ethanol to produce an ester.

It is a sweet smelling substance which are used in making perfumes and as flavoring agents.

On treating with sodium hydroxide the ester is converted back to alcohol and a sodium salt of carboxylic acid which is used in making soaps
