Esterification: Definition and example

Definition:

  • The process through which esters are produced, it is called esterification.
  • Esters are nothing but substances that have a fruity and pleasant smell.
  • When alcohol and carboxylic acid reacts, the reaction yields esters as products.

Example:

  • The reaction occurring between ethanol and ethanoic acid leads to the formation of an ester called ethyl ethanoate.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

C_{2} H_{5} O H+C H_{3} C O O H \stackrel{H_{2} S O_{4}}{\longrightarrow} C H_{3} C O O C_{2} H_{5}+H_{2} O
