Aestivation, otherwise called as 'summer sleep' is the period during which the animal stays inactive for a long time. During this period, the animal doesn't perform any much energy consuming activities. This is a kind of adaptation to escape from unfavourable conditions such as high temperature etc.

Estivation is when animals slow their activity for the hot, dry summer months. During a period of estivation, many reptiles go underground where it's cooler. Estivation is very similar to hibernation, when some mammals spend the winter moving very little and sleeping a lot, in order to save energy.
