Dicotyledonous plants, commonly called dicots, are one of the two major classes -- along with monocots -- of flowering plants known as angiosperms. Containing between 170,000 and 175,000 different species, dicots comprise most garden plants, broad-leafed flowering plants such as roses and magnolias, along with trees and shrubs. Although Theophrastus, the Greek philosopher and father of botany, first recognized differences among flowering plants in the third century B.C., classification of dicotyledonous plants did not occur until 1682 when John Ray published "Methodus Plantarum Nova," the first work to detail plant taxonomy.

The eudicots, Eudicotidae or eudicotyledons are a monophyletic clade of flowering plants that had been called tricolpates or non-magnoliid dicots by previous authors.
