  • Euploidy is a chromosomal variation that involves the entire set of chromosomes in a cell or an organism.
  • Other types of euploidy are autopolyploidy and allopolyploidy.
  • In autopolyploidy, there is an additional set of chromosomes, which may be from a parent or identical parental species (i.e. a single taxon).

Any change in number of sets of chromosome leads to euploidy that may be either loss or even may be addition of sets of chromosomes this process is known as euploidy.

Some special Features:-

  • ➲ Monoploidy(x) is the presence of one set ot chromosomes.

  • ➲ Presence of two sets of chromosomes is known as Diploidy (2x).

  • ➲ Presence of more than two sets of chromosomes is known as polyploidy.

It may be:-

  • →Triploidy (3x)
  • →Tetraploidy (4x)
  • → Pentaploidy (5x)
  • → Hexaploidy (6x)
  • → Heptaploidy (7x)
  • → Octaploidy (8x)

  • ➲ Polyploid plants reproduce sexually & then fertilize and also can form seed with even number of sets.

  • ➲ Odd number of sets like polyploid plants will be always sterile they can't reproduce by sexual reproduction.

  • ➲ Sterile set of polyploid can produce seedless fruits but they are unable to form fruits. They produce seedless fruits by the process of parthenocarpy.

  • Examples:- Banana and seedless grapes.
