1)Eutrophication means natural enrichment . when inorganic plant nutrients such as nitrate, phosphate etc enter the water bodies they cause Eutrophication .

2)These nutrients and Chemicals are discharged ,either naturally or through human activities .

3)This promotes excessive growth of phytoplankton and algae .This is called algal bloom .

4)Due to death and decomposition of algae there is depletion of oxygen in water .

5)Algal Bloom further blocks penetration of oxygen, light and heat into the water body .

6)This causes death of aquatic animals causing more decomposition and more Eutrophication in turn.

Eutrophication

  • Eutrophication is the process from which a body of water, or portions of it, becomes increasingly mineralized and nutrient-rich. "Nutrient-induced rise in phytoplankton productivity" has been considered as a concept.
  • Many freshwaters as well as coastal marine habitats across the world are being harmed by eutrophication.
  • Insufficient phosphorus seems to be almost invariably the cause of eutrophication in lakes and rivers.
