It is added to determine the 'endpoint' for 'volumetric complexometric titration'.

The best example of self indicator is Potassium Permanganate(KMnO4)

After completion of titration, the 'colour of the solution' becomes 'transparent'.

But when one more drop 'Potassium Permanganate is added' it changes the colour of solution to light pink indicating the endpoint of titration.
