Viruses are not able to generate energy through aerobic or anaerobic respiration or use energy through metabolic processes. They to not have the necessary organelles to replicate on their own. They are only able to behave like living organisms when they invade cells and get incorporated into the organism's DNA, where they can then replicate. Since viruses do not originate from preexisting cells, or undergo mitosis because they lack a nucleus, and are not made up of cells, they do not meet the criteria of true cells. As such, the cell theory is not able to explain the existence of viruses the way it explains the existence of cells.
