Exchange energy and its significance:

  • The energy is released when two or more electrons with the same spin-exchange their positions in the degenerate orbitals of a subshell.
  • The energy so released is known as the Exchange energy.
  • The exchange energy helps in stabilising the atom.
  • The orbitals which have the same energy are known as degenerate orbitals. When the electrons get energy they change their position. By absorbing the energy the electron moves from the lower energy state to a higher energy state.

Significance of exchange energy:

  • It forms a covalent bond of 'many solids' and is also accountable for ferromagnetic coupling.
