Simply put, Any reaction that release energy is called an EXOTHERMIC REACTION. A very common example is respiration. When you breathe you take in O2, digested food gets oxidised and energy is released into cells of your body.

FYI, when energy is absorbed, reactions are called Endothermic Reactions. Example is melting of ice, when ice absorbs heat energy and change into liquid state.
