External to the cell wall in a prokaryotic cell is the glycocalyx layer.

  • There are two types of cells found in organisms. the first is Eukaryotic and the second is prokaryotic.
  • Eukaryotic cells have a well-defined nucleus and nuclear membrane whereas prokaryotic cells don't have. the nuclear material is present in the cytoplasm in prokaryotes.
  • The external layer of the cell wall is glycocalyx present as a loose layer of cells in bacteria.
  • It is a gel-like mucilaginous covering outside the cell membrane.
  • Glycocalyx provides a barrier to outside objects due to its high density. Hence, preventing the pathogen to attack the cell.
