When the first set of parents crossed then the produced generation is said to be F1 generation.

When the progeny formed after crossing between first set of parents crosses with F1 individual then the formed generation is said to be F2 generator.

here F stands for filial. This concept was proposed by Gregor John Mendel. He is also known as father of Genetics.

F1 Generation

It refers to the first filial generation.

It consists of all offsprings produced from a parental cross.

F2 Generation

The second generation (progeny) produced by selfing (inbreeding) of F1 generation offsprings is called second filial generation.
