Family is a group consisting of two parents and their children living together as a unit.

Variation in role from rural to urban societies:

The family has experienced several changes in the industrial society. It has substantially reduced in size and purpose. Several particular agencies have now undertaken the task earlier performed by the family. Women have attained an increasing degree of economic independence. There is an increasing tendency towards a smaller family married couple and one or more children. The individualization of family members has occurred tremendously. The functions of the present day family tend to revolve around personality. The responsibility for socializing the young ones remains an important function of the family. Though the family has lost its function as a unit of production it still maintains a vital economic function as a unit of consumption. Thus, the family has adapted and is adapting it self to the changed environment and still performs important functions for the individual and the society.

The concept of rural families is, at best, a slippery one. This is because both aspects—family and rural—are today continuously being redefined. Further, in taking an international perspective, how family is defined varies regionally and from nation to nation. How family and rurality are defined differs depending on the theoretical context as well. Societies change just as people do. The change we see in people is often very obvious, as when they have a growth spurt during adolescence, lose weight on a diet, or buy new clothes or get a new hairstyle. The change we see in society is usually more gradual. Unless it is from a natural disaster like an earthquake or from a political revolution, social change is usually noticeable only months or years after it began. This sort of social change arises from many sources: changes in a society’s technology (as the news story on texting and driving illustrates), in the size and composition of its population, and in its culture. But some social change stems from the concerted efforts of people acting in social movements to alter social policy, as the news story on the student in the tent illustrates, or even the very structure of their government.
