It occurs in the case of Top gate. As the liquid metal is directly poured into Mould cavity, the filling time is very less. Hence the difference of temperature between top surface and bottom surface of casting is low. So the temperature gradient(which is the ratio of temperature difference to height) is low. So it is called favourable temperature gradient.
