In fertilization, male and female sex cells fuse to form a single cell called a zygote. The zygote grows and develops by mitosis into a fully functioning new individual. There are two mechanisms by which fertilization can take place.

In animals, there are two types of fertilisation, internal and external. Internal fertilisation happens inside the female body. External fertilisation happens outside the female body. Mammals, birds, and reptiles use internal fertilisation .Reproduction of the sea urchin ,fishes , frogs are typical example of external fertilization among aquatic animals.
