it is the separation of suspended solid matter or particles from a liquid. The separation takes place by a number of mechanisms that include straining, flocculation, sedimentation and surface capture.

straining : pouring liquid through a porous or perforated device or material in order to separate out any solid matter.

flocculation : a process by which a chemical coagulant added to the water acts to facilitate bonding between particles, creating larger aggregates which are easier to separate.

sedimentation : the process of allowing particles in suspension in water to settle out of the suspension under the effect of gravity.
