FIR's full form is First investigation report

  2. The law states that it is compulsory for an officer  in charge of a police station to register an FIR whenever a person gives information about a cognizable offence.
  3. The FIR usually mentions the date, time and place of the offence, including a description of the incidents that took place, it also states the name, signature and address of the complainant.
  4. An FIR can be given either orally or written.
  5. There is a prescribed form in which police registers an FIR.
  6. The complainant also has the legal right to get a free copy of the FIR
