In 1865 the mountain — previously referred to as Peak XV — was renamed for Sir George. Although commonly pronounced as “ever-est,” the correct pronunciation of Sir George's surname is actually “eve-rest,” with emphasis on the firstsyllable. Mount Everest has long been revered by local peoples.
