fixed length fields allot same length to all fields irrespective of their contents where as variable length fields allot as much length as needed by the contents of the field

Only a particular length can be stored in the variable .

If the length of the variable is more then the space gets wasted .

This is a disadvantage of using fixed length .

The variable length has an upper hand in this matter .
