Flames can be distinguished mainly on two basis:

1)Sooty flame or Unsooty flame

2) Colour

The chemical properties of the ignited substance decides whether the flame is sooty or Unsooty.

The energy required to excite the outer most electron of the ignited substance decides the colour of flame.
