This is the space which is present just below the summit. In this region division process goes very quickly.

Some points on flanks:-

1. This region forms leaf primordia.

2. Mainly shoot apex is seen in dome shape.

3. Plastochron is the term which is used for presenting time period of initiation of two consecutive leaf.

4. In reproductive shoot apex shape will be flat & broad.

5. In terminal position shoot apex is present.

6. First apical leaf is grown then it moves to marginal leaf grow.

7. It keeps strong the shoot apex.
