Okay Buddy here we go

Structure:

According to this model concept, the plasma membrane is said to have a Lipid Bilayer, where the Phospholipids organize themselves in a bilayer to hide their hydrophobic tail regions which tends to stay away from water and expose the hydrophilic regions to water. You see Phobic means fear of something.

They are very flexible to allow cells like WBC and RBC to change shape.

Components mainly include:

  • Lipids (Phospholipids, cholesterol,.....)
  • Proteins here and there
  • Carbohydrates in a considerable very few in amount

Function:

  • The plasma membrane protects the components inside the cell from the outside environment.
  • They also facilitate the both active [Transportation using energy(ATP) to move materials from lower to higher concentration] and passive [Transportation from higher to lower concentration without use of energy(ATP)] transportation of ions, organic compounds, etc.
  • As a Semipermeable(Allows movement of only selective substances) membrane it regulates the entering and exiting of materials.
  • The plasma membrane also plays a role in anchoring the cytoskeleton(which is somewhat like our skeletons to the cells) to provide shape to the cell, and in attaching to the extracellular matrix and other cells to help group cells together to form tissues.

Hope this will help...

Cheers...Me!!!
